Meeting the Finsterling.

Finstergrün Castle

It is said to stand in Ramingstein: Finstergrün Castle.

What a name! It sounds legendary, a little spooky, eerie. But it also sounds like adventure, excitement, a cool experience. And that is exactly what we want today. So, off to Ramingstein, just 8 kilometres from Tamsweg. There it sits enthroned, the castle. Most imposing, high above the Mur valley. The old castle from the 12th century is a ruin today; the newer part was built around 1900 and is now owned by the Protestant Youth of Austria.

Holiday camps take place here regularly, so there is plenty on offer for kids. We first opt for the castle tour and learn all about the lives of counts, guards and servants. And of course about the “Finsterling”, the castle’s very own resident ghost. Afterwards, castle riddles, the forest rope garden and the treat chamber await us. Simply super cool. A perfect day.

Even more perfect: a swim in the pond at Lerchpeuntgut in the evening. And for the grown-ups: a sundowner. Cheers!
