The Murtalbahn

Today we are going nostalgic. Properly! We are riding the Murtalbahn. And this is no ordinary regional express. No, this is a narrow-gauge railway from 1894. Wow – the children think it is super cool. At Tamsweg station we board the ancient carriages with their imperial flair. And off we go. We rattle and sway leisurely along the Mur and through forests and meadows. We wave to cyclists and canoeists and watch the old steam locomotive’s water tender being filled in Stadl an der Mur.

Murau is the end of the line, and we amble through the pretty little town in Styria before heading back the same way to Tamsweg. It is glorious to glide so gently through the landscape. When a little hunger strikes along the way, we head for the buffet car. In Emperor Franz Joseph’s original saloon carriage, the red-lacquered Murtal bar and the green-painted Styrian bar provide refreshment until we alight in Tamsweg, happy and content. An altogether wonderful day, which we let wind down in perfect relaxation at Lerchpeuntgut.
