The Story

Ulrich and his
Christine

The Antretters. That is Christine, Ulrich and their two boys. They are your hosts at Lerchpeuntgut. And they know their way around – rather well, in fact. Because they are from here, deeply rooted in the Lungau, connected to nature, people and traditions. Nothing pleases them more than reading their guests’ wishes from their faces. And delighting them. With their warmth, hospitality and
love for the Lungau.

The Lungau

In the heart of Austria

Between the Nock Mountains of Carinthia, the Radstadt Tauern and the High and Low Tauern lies the Lungau, the south-easternmost district of Salzburg, with Tamsweg as its main town. Along the courses of the upper Mur and the Taurach, 15 villages are spread across an area of 1,004 km². Together with the Nock Mountains, the Lungau was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau in 2012.

Villages: 15 villages with plenty to offer. Being active and indulging – both are wonderfully possible in one of the Lungau’s 15 villages at around 1,000 metres above sea level – 15 little paradises full of charm and countless possibilities.

Summits: Between glorious mountains and sunny heights you will find everything that makes a mountaineer’s heart leap. 190 mountain tours and 13 high-alpine tours offer highs for every level. Whether Falkert, Greifenberg, Lungauer Kalkspitze, the summit cross of the Klomnock or the Großer Rosennock – breathtaking views and summit bliss are guaranteed.

Rivers and lakes: A total of 30 streams and rivers run through the Salzburger Lungau. Whether leisurely or lively – they offer countless opportunities for rafting, swimming or fishing. Things are a little calmer at the region’s 60 mountain lakes. Absolutely refreshing!

Festivals and traditions: The Lungau calendar is full of highlights. Kasmandlgehn or Samson processions – between Candlemas, Easter, the solstice, harvest festival and Christmas you will find many of the Lungau’s traditional customs.

Family outings

Something for everyone

Something for everyone – that is guaranteed by the many active, cultural and indulgent highlights the Lungau has to offer.

If you are after movement, fun and action, the Family & Outdoor Parc in Mauterndorf and Mariapfarr has plenty in store. Whether flying fox over the Nessi pond, team course, water parc, bouldering, water tubing, trampoline or quads – there really is something for everyone here! An absolute highlight for young and old!

Off to the Middle Ages and back? That works wonderfully with a visit to Moosham Castle (just 8 km from Lerchpeuntgut). Moosham Castle can only be visited on a guided tour – but it is absolutely worth it. Not for nothing did the castle serve as the backdrop for numerous films, including “Beauty and the Beast”, “Sleeping Beauty”, “Rapunzel”, “The Fearless Vampire Killers” (Tom Turbo) and many more.

Hands-on medieval history also awaits visitors at Mauterndorf Castle. Exciting experience tours transport families back through the centuries. Here you can try on suits of armour and historical garments, visit old storerooms and taste culinary delights from days gone by.

The Lungau can also be explored in complete relaxation and comfort on a ride on the historic Murtalbahn.

Culture

Deeply rooted

We are deeply rooted in our traditions. Unique in the world, and often a little quirky. Prangstangen, Samson, the Preber shooting? You will find these only here and nowhere else. At the Prangstangen procession in June, up to 60,000 different summer flowers are wound around metre-high poles – surely one of the most beautiful and colourful experiences in the Lungau’s calendar of customs. The traditional Lungau Samson processions also take place during the alpine summer. Wooden figures up to 6.5 metres tall are carried through the streets, symbolising the Old Testament figure of Samson with his superhuman strength. And when summer draws to a close in August, it is time for the Preber shooting. Marksmen from all over Europe meet on the shores of the Prebersee to shoot at the reflections of targets in the water. With some skill and plenty of luck, the bullet dips a few centimetres into the moor water and ricochets into the target. Experiences of a special kind – only here in the Lungau!

Culture in the Lungau also means high culture of renown. Literature, theatre and first-class music delight connoisseurs all year round. At the Musiksommer St. Leonhard, renowned soloists and ensembles perform varied programmes of music from the Baroque onwards in the pilgrimage church of St Leonhard near Tamsweg.
